Simple Renal Cysts in Computed Tomography



Abstract
Simple renal cysts are extremely common lesions of the kidney. Cortical cysts increase in number with age and 50% of patients over the age of 50 have one or more cortical cysts seen at autopsy. The detection of renal cysts has dramatically increased with the use, of CT.
Authors reviewed 127 cases which incidentally shown simple renal cyst of 681 patients of abdominal CT including kidney which were carried out at Chonnam National University Hospital from Jan. 1983 to Jan. 1987.
The results are follows:
1. Of 681 cases of abdominal CT, the incidence of simple renal cyst was 127 cases(18.6%). The male to female ratio was 1.4:1. Over the 7th decade group(26.2%) was the most prevalent group.
2. Numbers of renal cyst were 207 of 127 cases; single was 90 cases and multiple was 37 cases.
3. Size of renal cysts; below the 1cm was 93 cases and over the 4cm was. 10 cases.
4. Distribution of the cysts; in right kidney were 110 cases, in left kidney were 97 cases and in both kidney were 30 cases(23.6%).
